Square review
Payments and point of sale, with automatic Google review campaigns on the paid plans.
Written by the team at FiveStariz, who sell a competing product. Every number here was read on squareup.com on 18 October 2026. We say where they beat us.
| Price | $49 a month per location |
| Best for | A shop or salon on Square Plus with customers who come back often. |
| Not for | A roofer, dentist or plumber whose customers return once a year. |
Square Plus, which is where the marketing tools start. Square Free cannot send campaigns. Prices change, so check squareup.com before you decide.
What Square actually does
- Automatic email and text campaigns that collect Google reviews after a sale.
- Google review counts in the Square dashboard.
- Square Feedback, which is private and never shown publicly.
- Customer reviews on a Square Online store, which stay on your own site.
- You have to set up a Google Business Profile and sync it with Square first.
What Square charges
From their own pricing page on 18 October 2026.
| Plan | Price | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Square Free | $0 | Per location. No email or text marketing, so no review campaigns. |
| Square Plus | $49 | Per location. Unlimited email and 500 texts a month, then 3 cents each. |
| Square Premium | $149 | Per location. Unlimited email and 2,500 texts, then 1.5 cents each. |
Ours, for the same job: $19 for 1 location, $29 with a team, $5 per location from 10 with your own brand on it.
What Square does well
- At no extra cost once you are on Square Plus, which many shops already are.
- It sends to Google, which the other till and booking products in this group mostly do not.
- Generous text allowances: 500 a month on Plus and 2,500 on Premium.
- Private feedback is kept properly private.
Where it falls short
- The main automatic trigger needs a customer to make 3 purchases in a year. A yearly service never reaches it.
- The other trigger fires "when a customer leaves positive feedback", which is a private sentiment check before the Google ask. That is gating.
- $49 a month per location, so 3 branches cost 3 times as much.
- Google only. No Facebook, no Yelp.
- No reminder sequence is documented. One ask, no chase.
- The dashboard shows a count of new reviews, not a review inbox you can work through.
- 250 character limit per text.

Square, answered
Does Square send Google review requests?
Yes, on Square Plus at $49 a month per location or Premium at $149. Square Free cannot, because it has no email or text marketing. We read the pricing on their own packaging page on 18 October 2026. You must sync a Google Business Profile first.
Does Square do review gating?
One of its triggers does. Square can send the Google review campaign "when a customer leaves positive feedback", where feedback means the private Square Feedback channel that is never shown publicly. That is a private sentiment check first and a Google ask only for the happy ones.
Why does my Square review automation never send?
Most likely the trigger. The main automatic rule fires when a customer becomes a regular, which Square defines as 3 purchases in the last year. A plumber, roofer or dentist seen once a year never gets there. There is also no documented reminder, so a missed ask is not chased.
Square or a dedicated review tool?
If you are a cafe on Square Plus with regulars, use what you already pay for. If your customers come once a year, the trigger will not fire for them. We are $19 a month, we ask after any job, we chase, and we never check how someone feels first.
Want the asking done for less?
FiveStariz is $19 a month, the price is on the page, and there is no setup fee.
